More and more doctors have now got their fingers on the pulse of their online reputation.

In fact, according to a new study by ZocDoc (an online medical care scheduling service), approximately 85 percent of doctors now actively monitor online reviews posted by patients. And it’s not just reviews of themselves; 36 percent even said that their review management efforts also extend to include keeping track of what people are saying about their competitors.

The study, which is based on the results of a survey that polled 360 physicians in July, shows that it’s not just consumers who are monitoring health information and medical reviews online; doctors and health providers are doing it, too – embracing information and opinions found on physician and medical review sites like Yelp, Google (Google+ Local / Google Maps), Dr. Oogle, HealthGrades, HealthTap, Vitals, and RateMDs, among many others.

Here are other interesting findings from the ZocDoc study:

  • Asked to rank the fairness of their reviews based on a scale of 1 to 10, 23 percent said that the reviews are very fair (8-10), 62 percent said they’re fair (4-7), and 15 percent said they’re not fair (1-3).
  • Doctors and medical professionals are also active on social media sites, with 53 percent having a Facebook profile for their practice. Moreover, 34 percent also have Google+ accounts, 28 percent are on LinkedIn, and 21 percent have Twitter accounts.

“Patients are eager to access the healthcare system in the same way they engage with their favorite consumer brands, research hotels, or even book restaurants and flights, and it’s important for any physician practicing in today’s day and age to embrace this shift,” said Dr. Keri Peterson, an internal medicine specialist. “As people continue to depend on these reviews to make informed healthcare choices, it will become increasingly important for patients and doctors alike to know which systems close the loop and verify all of these reviews to ensure that they are trustworthy.”
